Anthony DeVante Edwards was born on August 5, 2001, in Atlanta, Georgia. He grew up in a sports-oriented family, with his mother and grandmother being influential in his life.

Edwards attended Holy Spirit Preparatory School in Atlanta, where he became a standout basketball player.

Edwards played one season of college basketball at the University of Georgia. During his time with the Georgia Bulldogs, he averaged 19.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game, earning SEC Freshman of the Year honors.

Edwards declared for the 2020 NBA Draft after his freshman year. He was selected as the first overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves, making him the first Georgia player to be drafted number one overall.
